Saio is the woman of the Imperial Family for serving the Ise Shrine instead of the Emperor. She was dispatched to Ise instead of the Emperor, and lived in Saiku. Saio was decided to be one person by one generation of Emperors, and was chosen by fortune-telling. The condition was unmarried. After being chosen, the trip for five nights and six days was taken from a capital to Ise in September about two years after. This was called Saio Gunko(carrying out in a large group). It was one of that time gayest processions. The Saio Festival is a thing reproducing this procession, and is held early in June every year.

Saiku Historical Museum

Existence of the ruins of Saiku became clear and Saiku Historical Museum was established as a prefectural museum on the remains of Saiku in 1989. Historical materials related to Saiku are exhibited abundantly.

Itsukinomiya History experience Museum

In Itsukinomiya History experience Museum, a life and culture of the aristocrat of the Heian period (794-1185) able be experienced. This museum is built by manner of Heian era palatial architecture, The visitor can try on the clothes of the aristocrat in the Heian period, such as Juni-hitoe (a ceremonial robe of a Japanese court lady).
