History

Toba City is located in Shima Peninsula, and the whole city area is specified as Ise-Shima National Park. The seashore is a rias coastline and is nationally known as a scenic tourist resort. The Toba harbor was known as a natural right harbor from ancient times. Since Kuki Yoshitaka who was a local clan of this area in the second half of the 16th century distinguished himself in battle as a subordinate of Oda Nobunaga, he was able to become a feudal lord of Shima Province. Yoshitaka built the Toba castle on the slightly elevated hill facing the sea in 1594. This castle is a natural fort and became the headquarters of Kuki suigun navy.

The Toyotomi army and the Tokugawa army were fought in Sekigahara in Gifu Prefecture in 1600. Kuki Yoshitaka joined the Toyotomi army and Moritaka(Yoshitaka's second son) fought with the father as a general of the Tokugawa army. By defeat of the Toyotomi army, Yoshitaka committed hara-kiri.

In 1603, Toba Domain was established by Tokugawa shogunate and Kuki Moritaka became the first lord of Toba Domain. However, since succession dispute happened when Moritaka passed away, Tokugawa shogunate changed the territory of the Kuki family into two inland. Since the Edo Shogunate determined national isolation, the necessity for suigun navy was also lost and Kuki suigun navy disappeared.

Toba way is the highway which leads to the Inner Shrine of Ise via Toba City from Kaminogo, Isobe-cho, Shima City. Hirono family was the millionaire who enacted a village headman in feudal Japan of Toba at the Edo period(1603-1868).
