About Shima City

Hamajima Town, Daio Town, Shima Town, Ago Town, and Isobe Town merged in 2004, and Shima City was born.Shima City is located in the southern part of Shima Peninsula, and the whole region is included in Ise-Shima National Park. Ago Bay and Matoya Bay have a rias coastline, and are nationally known as a scenic tourist resort. There are large or small 60 islands in Ago Bay. Kashiko Island is one in 60 islands and is chosen as the venue of the 42nd summit. Moreover, this bay is known as the place where Mikimoto Kokichi tackled pearl culture.

Shima Province and Shima Kokubunji temple

Shima Province is "ritsuryo" legal codes nation built at the Nara period(710-794). The city region of Shima City and Toba City are included in Shima Province. The ancient provincial government offices of Shima Province was put on Ko in the southwest of Matoya Bay. Kokubunji temple is a government-managed temple built by each province. Shima Kokubunji temple was built also in this place(Ko) in 741. Although this temple was burned down in the midst of Onin War (1467-1477), it was rebuilt in 1836. The principal object of worship at this temple is Bhaisajyaguru (buddha able to cure all ills), and escaped destruction by fire.Generally this Buddha statue is exhibited every about 20 years.

Anorisaki and Daiouzaki Lighthouse

Daiouzaki Lighthouse was located in the boundary of Kumano Sea (Kumanonada) and Enshu Sea (Enshunada), and was built in 1927.The Kuki family's Nagiri Castle was on the hill in which a Daiozaki lighthouse is located. Kuki Yoshitaka equivalent to the 8th generation was the chief of Kuki suigun navy. Since he distinguished himself in war according to the command of Oda Nobunaga (1534-1582), he became a feudal lord of Shima Province. It is said that Yoshitaka was born by Nagiri Castle.

Shima Marine Land aquarium(Kashikojima Island)

Shima Marine Land aquarium is in Kashiko Island chosen as the hall of the 42nd summit. The ocean sunfish hall is the most popular in this aquarium. This aquarium is performing group feeding of sunfish, and it is not seeing a kind even in Japan. Demonstration to which a woman diver (Ama) feeds fish is performed in the migrating fish tank.
