Tokaido Highway was the main highway in the Edo period(1603-1868), and connected Nihonbashi Bridge(Tokyo) and Sanjo-ohashi Bridge(Kyoto).

Arimatsu town was established by Owari feudal domain in 1608. Arimatsu tie-dyed cloth made by Takeda Shokuro and others was protected as specialty crops of Owari feudal domain. The travelers who come and go Tokaido Highway called it the highest specialty article in Tokaido Highway.

Travelers passe Hirabe Joyatou(night-light) and go into Narumi post-town. Zuisen-ji Temple on a slightly elevated hill near Oogigawa river was founded by the lord of Negoya castle in 1396. Zenshoji fort on the hill of this temple in back was one of the military position of the Oda army in Battle of Okehazama (1560).

Narumi Shrine

The Narumi shrine founded in 686 was put on the Tenjin mountain facing Oogi river. Since Yasuhara Munenori built the Negoya castle at the place in 1394, this shrine was transferred to the its present location.

In the Edo period(1603-1868),good salt was produced in Hoshizaki(Minami Ward, Nagoya City). Salt produced here was carried in the direction of Shinshu via Asuke from the Shizuke Way.

Production of Takuan(yellow pickled radish) using this salt was prosperous in Gokiso village in along the Shizuke Way.

 The origin of Kasadera Kannon
The origin of Kasadera Kannon

The origin of Kasadera Kannon was a small shrine built in the 7th century. In order that Priest Zenko might deify the Buddha statue made using driftwood, a small shrine was built. If 100 years or more passed, the small shrine fell into ruin and had come to be exposed to rain. A daughter who pitied the situation had covered the Buddha statue with the bamboo hat. Fujiwara Kanehira met with the spectacle in the middle of a trip, and came to love the daughter. Two persons who got married built Ryufukuji Temple(Kasadera Kannon) in the present location. The name of this temple means the temple covered with the bamboo hat.

Kasadera Kannon is one of the Owari 4 major Kannons with Jimokuji Kanoon, Arako Kannon, and Ryusenji Kannon. This temple had come to be alike of the role which protects Nagoya Castle.

The lowlands of the Yamasaki river both banks inserted into the Mizuho plateau and the kasadera plateau had been called Yobutsugi beach. The meaning of Yobutsugi is an act which connects voice from people to people. Since the voice which tells the departure of the ferryboat from Miya post-town,this name"Yobutsugi" was given.

The Tobe shrine was founded in 1603 on the hill which could overlook the sea under its eyes. Several years afterward, Matsudaira Tadayoshi (the lord of Kiyosu Castle)suffered from a disease. By the efficacy of the prayer to a shrine, he recovered from the disease soon. As the gratitude, many buildings were contributed to the shrine. Honden(the main shrine) built by the style of architecture of Momoyama Era(1568-1598) is specified as Important Cultural Properties.

Tsukadajinjya is a shrine in Mizuho ward, Nagoya City. This shrine was built in order to deify the dragon king lived in the pond of the ground. Fujiwara Motonaga is Kugyo(court noble) in the late Heian period (794-1185) which suited the status of Dajo-daijin (Emperor's highest status) . He was known as an expert of Biwa (a four-stringed Japanese lute). However, he was dismissed by Tairano Kiyomori and made into exile at Owari Province.

Shogakuji Temple is a temple of Jodo Shu(Pure Land sect of Buddhism) located in the right bank of Shojin River. The meaning of Shojin is abstaining from a deed during a fixed period and purifying the body. After Peoples who worshiped at Atsuta Shrine carried out purification ceremony on this river, they went to the shrine. Large-scale river improvement was performed and Shojin River was again born to the Shin-horikawa River in 1910.
