Nagoya Castle was built by Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1615 around the ruins of the former Nakono Castle, built by the Imagawa clan. The Nagoya Castle tower, with its gold shachihoko, votive tiger-fish roof devices, has the largest floor space in Japan. After the collapse of the Tokugawa Shogunate and the establishment of the Meiji government, all the buildings except for the castle tower and Honmaru Goten were demolished and used as military facilities. In 1930, Nagoya Castle was given to the city of Nagoya by the government and became the first castle in Japan to be designated a national treasure. On May 14, 1945, the castle tower, Honmaru Goten, the northeast corner tower, and the main gate were destroyed by fire in an air raid by the U.S. military. The large and small towers were rebuilt in 1959 with steel-framed reinforced concrete structures. The restoration of Nagoya Castle Honmaru Palace in 2009 and was completed in 2018.Currently, plans are underway to restore the castle tower in wood.
