Kusanagi no tsurugi(Kusanagi sword) is one of the three sacred imperial treasures. In 668 during the reign of Emperor Tenchi,Kusanagi sword currently kept in the Imperial Court was returned to Atsuta Jingu. It was wished that Kusanagi sword which left the capital would bring stability forever to the Imperial Court, and this Shinto ritual began to be performed.
The procession of Mikoshi(a portable shrine) which left the main shrine goes to the remains of the Chinko Gate(Chinko-mon) via the South Gate.
The Chinko Gate was burned down by the air raid of World War II, and is the West Gate of Atsuta Shirine now.
Here,Shinto ritual, such as food offering to the gods, the recital of Shinto prayers, kagurasacred(Shinto music and dance), and worship, is performed . After Shinto ritual is completed, Mikoshi (a portable shrine) returns to the main shrine through the original route.
