Kiso River is a river representing Japan which flows into Ise Bay from Nagano Prefecture through Gifu Prefecture, Aichi Prefecture, and Mie Prefecture.

The headstream of Kiso river is in the south direction of Hachimori Mountain in Kiso village.This river flows into the Okukiso lake of the south of this mountain.This lake was artificially made by construction of the Misogawa dam.
Although Kiso-mura is a village with a population about of 3000, it is known as a place with the headwaters of the Kisogawa.Lacquer ware products etc. are specialties.
Kiso Town prospered as the post town in Nakasendo Highway at the Edo period (1603-1868).The Kiso Yoshinaka which contributed to foundation of the Kamakura shogunate(1185-1333) was born here.Although he was nominated as the commander-in-chief of the Kamakura army, he fought with Goshirakawa retired emperor, and perished by his elder brother.
Agematsu Town is in the south of Kiso Town.The huge granite was minced by the rapid stream in Kiso river and the Nezame-no-Toko was formed.By the upstream dam construction, the water level fell and it became the present figure.
Okuwa-mura is a village which is downstream from Agematsu town.There are two posting stations, the Suhara-shuku, and the Nojiri-shuku in Nakasendo Highway.
Momosuke bridge was built in order to carry the materials for Yomikaki power plant construction.Momosuke Fukuzawa contributed to the water-power generation of Japan, therefore his name was given to the bridge.

Nakatsugawa developed as the post town in Nakasendo Highway located in along Nakatsugawa river. This river flows into Kiso river.
Naegi castle is a mountain castle of the Toyama clan along Kiso river.Only the stone wall remains now.
Momosuke Fukuzawa built the Ooi dam in Taisho Era (1912-1926). As the by-product, Enakyo was born as an artificial lake.Enakyo provides the beautiful scene through the four seasons for tourists.
Maruyama dam is a multipurpose dam about 100m high. This dam was built as a forerunner of the large-scale dam construction after World WarII.The old Yaotsu power plant located downstream from Maruyama dam was built as first full-scale plant in Kiso River system in 1911.Tsunaba means the dump of wood.The lumbers cut down from the Mt.Kiso were constructed by the raft for the first time in this place.
Aichi Irrigation sluice gate is installed in Kanayama lake formed by the dam, and water is supplied to the Chita peninsula.

Although this harbor prospered as an important point of the water transport using Kiso river, this harbor declined by development of the railroad. The Imawatari dam is located on the downmost-stream of Kiso river.
Although Nakasendo Highway passed along the inside of the mountain from Nakatsugawa City, this Highway progresses along Kiso river from the Oota posting station again.About 12km Kiso River from Minokamo City to Inuyama City is called Japan Rhine. Since scenery resembled Rhine valley of Germany, this name was given.
Inuyama City is located in the place where Kiso river flows into the Noubi Plain. Over many years, the earth and sand of Kiso river had accumulated and Inuyama alluvial fan was formed.National Treasure Inuyama Castle was built by Oda Nobuyasu(Oda Nobunaga's uncle) in 1537. This castle is the oldest existing wooden castle tower in Japan.

From the Inuyama downstream to the mouth of Kiso River, two or more rivers became intricate and flow into the Ise Bay.
Since the area of the Nagara river and Ibi river circumference in the west of Kiso river is lowlands, damage from a flood occurred frequently and Owari feudal domain was pressed for flood prevention works. In 1753, Tokugawa shogunate ordered Satsuma feudal domain this flood prevention works.
This difficult work was completed applying about one year and a half, but Satsuma feudal domain was troubled with a large amount of expenses and about 90 peoples killed by the construction. The construction director Hirata Ykukie took responsibility and committed hara-kiri. Many victims are buried in this area.
From the middle of Meiji Era(1868-1912), the construction which separates 3 major rivers,Kiso river,Nagara river,Ibi river, was performed by Johannis de Rijke.
