History and Recommended spots

The middle-class samurai's mansions had gathered for the east side of Nagoya Castle. Now, the samurai gate in Chikaramachi is saved in the position of those days .Kenchu-ji is a family temple of the Owari Tokugawa family. It was built by the Tokugawa Mitsutomo(The second generation of Owari clan feudal lord) in 1651 for the father. Somon(main gate) and Sanmen remain with the figure at the time of foundation. Tokoden which reconstructed the building of the Nagoya chamber of commerce is registered tangible cultural property.

Tokugawaen(North in Kenchu-ji Temple) was built as retreat of Tokugawa Mitsutomo. After Mitsutomo passed away, mansions were yielded to the important vassal and used as vassal's suburban residence. In the middle of Meiji Era, it was again returned to the Tokugawa family and became a home of the Tokugawa family. The possession article of the Owari Tokugawa family is exhibited in the Tokugawa Art Museum. Tokugawa Ieyasu's collection of books is possessed and opened to the hosa library. Although the garden was presented by Nagoya City in 1931, it was burned down by the war with the mansion. It was fixed as a Japanese garden(a stroke-style garden around a big pond) in 2004, and is opened to the public.

The area with a samurai residence became a home of the famous men of the Nagoya business world from the end of Meiji Era(1868-1912). Futaba-kan was the residence in which Kawakami Sadayakko(The actress who is the beginning in Japan) and Fukuzawa Momosuke(He was called the Japanese electric power king.) lived from Taisho Era(1912-1926) to the early stages of Showa Era(1926-1989). Then, it dissolved, and although saved, reconstruction restoration was done by Nagoya City administration in 2000. In addition, Shumoku-kan(residence of Imoto Tamesaburo), Toyoda Sasuke's residence , Haruta Tetsujiro's residence, etc. are saved and exhibited. The whole place from Nagoya Castle to Tokugawaen is called Cultural Path.
